Chapter Forty-Six: Ninefold Daily Transformation, the Dao Body Adapts
Volume Two: The Separation of Clear and Turbid — The First Opening of Heaven and Earth
Within a single day, Pangu's body underwent nine transformations.
The first transformation occurred in the early morning. His body temperature began to rise; the cold qi brought from Chaos was driven out, replaced by a warm, flowing heat. His muscles, in that warmth, grew more supple; his bones grew sturdier.
The second transformation arrived shortly after. Fine patterns appeared on the surface of his skin — not wrinkles, but channel-marks left by Primordial Qi flowing across his body's surface.
The remaining seven transformations were distributed at roughly even intervals throughout the day. Each transformation answered a different part of his body — sometimes the bones, sometimes the meridians, sometimes the internal organs, sometimes the skin. After the nine transformations were complete, his body would have a brief period of stability, and then a new round of transformations would begin again.
Pangu did not resist those transformations. He let his body follow its own rhythm to adapt to this newborn Heaven and Earth. He knew instinctively that these transformations were necessary — his body needed to transform from Chaos-state to Heaven-Earth-state, and the Ninefold Daily Transformation was the method of that transformation.
The nine transformations were evenly distributed throughout the day, like a symphony of nine movements resounding within his body. Each transformation answered a different part of his body — bones, meridians, Primordial Qi Sea, Spirit-Consciousness, internal organs — cycling among them in rotation. His adaptive capacity improved after each transformation — the initial transformations would cause him brief discomfort, but later he could complete adjustment even as the transformation was occurring, barely feeling any interruption.
The Ninefold Transformation's operation within Pangu's body had become so natural that he barely felt them proceeding. Only at the critical point of each transformation would the interior of his body briefly light up with a faint glow — that light shone out from within him, illuminating a small area around him. In the flash of that light, he saw the internal structure of his own body, clearly presented in his inward field of vision like an illuminated blueprint. The lines on that blueprint, through flash after flash, were continuously refined and perfected.
The most profound change the Ninefold Transformation left within Pangu's body was not the growth of strength but the fundamental transformation of his mode of perception. Before, he had perceived the outer world through his Spirit-Consciousness; now, he perceived it directly through his body. His skin could feel the flow of air; his bones could feel the tremors of the Great Earth; his hair could feel the veering of air currents. The entire Heaven and Earth transmitted their signs to him through the countless contact points where his body touched Heaven and Earth. He was not observing Heaven and Earth; he was himself a sensory organ of Heaven and Earth.
After the first transformation ended, Pangu opened his eyes and looked at his palm. The lines of his palm were clearer than before the transformation; the edges of each line were as distinct as if recarved. The temperature of his palm was also higher than before; that warmth seeped from his palm to his fingertips, and from his fingertips radiated into the air. His body was awakening from the cold of Chaos — in the Chaos Era, his body, though alive, had been a life approaching stillness. Now his body was being infused with a dynamic vitality.
During the third transformation, his spine emitted a series of faint crackling sounds. The joints between each vertebra were, during the transformation, readjusted in position, like a necklace restrung. The curve of the entire spine became more fluid; the arc from his cervical spine to his coccyx was like a perfect bow. It was not pain but a moderate tension — like the crisp sound when the string of a musical instrument is pulled to standard pitch during tuning.
The fifth transformation affected his five solid and six hollow organs. The position of his heart within his chest underwent a subtle shift — it moved slightly to the left by one fraction, making its position in the chest more fitting. His lungs also expanded in breadth during the transformation; each breath drew in more air than before. His internal organs moved more smoothly in the new arrangement, like a newly tuned instrument finding its proper harmony.
The eighth transformation was on the perceptual level. His Spirit-Soul, like a piece of cloth folded too long, was fully spread out in a single violent shake. That unfolding process briefly brought him into a state of extreme consciousness expansion — he could simultaneously perceive everything happening between Heaven and Earth, from the extension of every crack on the Celestial Dome to every deep movement of the Great Earth, to the movement of every mote of dust in the air. All information flooded into his consciousness at the same time; the sheer magnitude of that information nearly overloaded his perception. But after a brief confusion, his consciousness learned by instinct to distinguish: not all information was important; he only needed to attend to information directly related to the stability of Heaven and Earth; the rest could pause briefly at the edge of his consciousness and then naturally flow through.
After all nine transformations were complete, Pangu stood in place feeling his body entirely renewed. Every part of him was operating in a new way, coordinated as though an innate whole. His body had completed the foundational transition from Chaos-state to Heaven-Earth-state; from here, it would grow ever stronger through each round of the Ninefold Transformation.
When all nine transformations were complete, the sensations they had left still lingered in his body, like each thread of sensation still trembling faintly. The Ninefold Transformation was not only a bodily change but also a tempering of the Spirit-Soul. At the critical point of each transformation, his Spirit-Soul would briefly break through to a new perceptual level, seeing things normally invisible — those points of light in the darkness, those minute stirrings in stillness, those gradual changes in apparent constancy. After the Ninefold Transformation, the way he saw the world was already different.
In the gap between one round of the Ninefold Transformation, he lowered his head and looked at his hands. The lines of his palms were already vastly different from those in the Chaos Era — those blurred, broken lines had become clear and continuous, as though redrawn by an invisible hand. Each palm-line had a clear direction, converging into a web at the center of his palm. The lines of his palm were the fingerprints left upon him by the weight of the Celestial Dome.
The seventh transformation brought a peculiar auditory experience. Pangu discovered that his ears could now hear sounds previously inaudible — the extremely low-cadence hum of Clear-Turbid air currents flowing between Heaven and Earth, the drum-like vibrations of the Celestial Dome's membrane under the impact of air currents, the fine cracking deep within the earth as rock strata were compressed. Those sounds had all been beyond his hearing before, but after the seventh transformation, they flooded into his perception as though a door had been pushed open. This world was far richer and noisier than he had imagined in Chaos — it was not silent, but filled with sounds of all kinds; he had simply been unable to hear them before.
When the ninth transformation ended, the entire surface of Pangu's skin was covered in a thin, transparent membrane — not attached from without, but naturally secreted from his skin. That membrane quickly dried and hardened in the air, then peeled away from his body, like a snake shedding its skin, revealing beneath it newer, smoother, tougher skin. Old residues no longer suited to Heaven and Earth peeled away from his body; new structures born for Heaven and Earth grew forth from within. Shedding skin was the rite of bidding farewell to the past and facing the future.
The sixth transformation brought a deep skeletal adjustment. Pangu could hear from within his spine a low sound, like the sound of tree roots slowly growing in soil — it was the sound of bones rearranging their structure under heavy pressure. The connections between each vertebra grew tighter and more stable during the transformation, like stone slabs re-fitted together, the gaps filled with a new type of bone matter, forming a nearly inseparable complete structure. His spine, in the transformation, shifted from a segmented independent structure into a single, unbroken dragon-bone stretching without end.
