Chapter Forty-Four: Qiankun First Established, Yin-Yang First Formed

Volume Two: The Separation of Clear and Turbid — The First Opening of Heaven and Earth

After the Chaos remnants were pushed back, a region of truly pure space appeared within the Heaven-Earth Interlayer. This was the first zone in this cosmos completely free of Chaos contamination — Clear was purely clear, Turbid purely turbid, and in between flowed nothing but pure Primordial Qi. Standing at the very center of that space, Pangu felt a sense of spaciousness for the first time. Around him was no longer compressed Chaos Qi but a light vessel in which he could breathe freely.

He drew a deep breath. That light Primordial Qi surged into his body and circulated once through his meridians. It was far easier to absorb than Chaos Qi, as though food prepared specifically for him. In the process of circulating through his body, the Primordial Qi of its own accord divided into two different energy forms — one warm, upward-moving, diffusive; the other cool, downward-moving, contractive. The two streams of energy converged at his dantian — the energy-centre below the navel — forming a spontaneously rotating image of Yin-Yang.

Pangu perceived the rotation of those two energies — this was the foundation of all his future power. Yin-Yang had taken shape; the frame of Heaven and Earth was growing forth from within his body.

The preliminary establishment of Yin-Yang brought true structure to the space between Heaven and Earth — not the formless state of Chaos, but a state with direction, with layers, with order. Clear Qi above, Turbid Qi below; Yang energy diffusing, Yin energy contracting; the two forces formed stable interaction at their boundary. The embryonic form of how the world would operate revealed itself — not static, but dynamic; not frozen, but flowing; not dead, but alive. The interaction of Yin-Yang was the world's first heartbeat.

The interaction of Yin-Yang qi between Heaven and Earth formed a wondrous rhythm — not a simple alternation, but a cycle of inhalation and exhalation, one breath at a time. Yang energy was active by day and contracted by night; Yin energy was active by night and contracted by day. The two forces alternated dominance over the energy state between Heaven and Earth within the span of a single day. Pangu's body began to naturally adjust its energy distribution with the alternation of Yin-Yang — when Yang energy dominated by day, he used more Yang force to prop up Heaven; when Yin energy dominated by night, he used more Yin force to press down the Earth.

The distribution of Yin-Yang qi between Heaven and Earth was not uniform — certain regions tilted toward Yang, others toward Yin. Those distributional differences would directly influence the future climate and surroundings of those regions. Regions tilted toward Yang would be warmer and drier; regions tilted toward Yin would be colder and wetter. Those differences were not flaws but diversity — a world without differences would be monotonous; a world with differences possessed layers and richness.

Pangu's dantian, within that Yin-Yang rotation, formed a minute core — that core was not matter but a condensed state of energy, like a knot twisted from ten thousand energy threads. An unprecedented sense of fullness — his body was no longer merely a passive container; it was becoming a vessel capable of giving birth to energy on its own. The forces of Yin-Yang cycled ceaselessly within him; each cycle produced new strength; that strength flowed from his dantian through his entire body, and from his entire body back to his dantian, forming an energy circuit that would never cease.

His gaze fell upon the dividing line between Heaven and Earth — there, Clear and Turbid converged, Yin-Yang interacted. At this convergence, he noticed an entirely new phenomenon — where Clear and Turbid met, something he named 'Primordial Qi' was produced. It was neither Clear nor Turbid, but a new substance naturally generated when Clear and Turbid encountered each other. Primordial Qi lacked the clear directional tendencies of Clear and Turbid; it hovered between the two, neutral, malleable. Primordial Qi would become the most important form of energy in this future Heaven and Earth — it was not suited, like Clear Qi, only for rising, nor like Turbid Qi only for sinking; it could flow freely between Heaven and Earth, becoming the bridge connecting Clear and Turbid. The direction of Heaven and Earth's future evolution revealed itself: Clear Qi and Turbid Qi would not remain forever separate; through their interaction, they would produce ever more complex, ever more exquisite combinatorial forms.

The stability of Yin-Yang caused Pangu's body to enter a state of spontaneous operation. He no longer needed to deliberately maintain the energy balance within his body — Yin-Yang qi circulated of their own accord through his meridians, like an underground river that would never cease. That river departed from the core of his dantian, ascended along his spine to reach the Celestial Dome, then turned back from the Celestial Dome, descended along the front of his body to return to his dantian, and flowed onward toward the Great Earth. With each complete circuit, his strength grew one measure purer. Heaven and Earth were not a passive existence; they were a living, self-operating order. All he needed to do was give this living order a stable foundation, and it would complete everything else on its own.

The interaction of Yin-Yang qi unfolded simultaneously within and outside Pangu's body. Inside, the rotation of Yin-Yang sustained his vital force; outside, the convergence of Clear and Turbid shaped the frame of Heaven and Earth. His body was the microcosm of Heaven and Earth; Heaven and Earth were the macrocosm of his body. He was not an independent observer standing outside the external world; he and this world were one. He was no longer a tool propping up Heaven and Earth; he was Heaven and Earth itself, recognizing and shaping itself through a form called Pangu.

In the alternation of Yin-Yang, a subtle change appeared between Heaven and Earth. That change was not the advance of Clear-Turbid separation, but the space between Heaven and Earth itself beginning to present a kind of 'texture' — no longer mere empty void, but filled with something like flowing water, an invisible vessel. That vessel was the primal Primordial Qi produced from the convergence of Clear and Turbid. Primordial Qi flowed slowly between Heaven and Earth, like an invisible river circulating between them. It flowed without bias, without haste or slowness, carrying an innate sense of order, keeping the energy distribution between Heaven and Earth in a state of rough equilibrium.

He extended one hand forward, palm open. Primordial Qi flowed between his fingers, bringing a tactile sensation akin to a faint breeze — gentle, warm, carrying that distinctive warmth-and-moisture born of Yin-Yang convergence. In that flow, he saw the future direction of Heaven and Earth's development — not one-way separation, but bidirectional circulation; not a fixed structure, but a dynamic equilibrium. The essence of Heaven and Earth was motion — stillness was only an instantaneous slice of motion, while the true constant was ceaseless flow and change.

At his dantian, the rotation of that Yin-Yang core grew ever more stable. The rotation speed was not fast, but each revolution produced a new thread of strength — not energy drawn from his body, but energy spontaneously generated when Yin-Yang qi converged. That energy was like a clear spring, gushing forth from his dantian and flowing through his entire body, then overflowing from the soles of his feet and the tips of his fingers into the Celestial Dome and the Great Earth. He did not need to deliberately produce it; it would generate on its own; so long as Yin-Yang continued to interact, the production of energy would not cease. The mystery of Yin-Yang lay in this — absolute separation produces stagnation; absolute fusion produces chaos; but communication within separation produces true creative power.

His finger trembled faintly. That tremor was not a spasm from fatigue but a faint pulsation felt at his fingertips at the moment when energy flow direction shifted during the switch between Yin-Yang within his body. At the transition point of Yin-Yang alternation, the direction of energy flow within his body would undergo an instantaneous reversal — from ascending to descending, or from descending to ascending. That reversal, at each alternation point, would cause his body to experience a brief, nearly imperceptible sense of weightlessness. The essence of Yin-Yang alternation was not a smooth transition; each switch was a miniature subversion, a process in which an old equilibrium was broken and a new one established.

He lowered his head and looked at his own chest. Where his heart beat, a soft light faintly shone through — it was the glow produced by the stable rotation of the Yin-Yang core within his body. That light passed through skin, muscle, and bone, forming at the center of his chest a faint circular halo. That halo expanded and contracted faintly with his breathing, like the visible form of his life-fire. The temperature of the halo was slightly higher than the average temperature of his body, as though a gentle flame burned continuously within him.
