Chapter Seventeen: Inward Observation of the Ninefold Transformation, the Dao Body Refined to the Microscopic

Volume One: The Chaos Egg — An Eternity of Slumber

The fissure widened slowly; Void seeped in. Pangu's slumber grew ever deeper. He withdrew his Spirit-Consciousness entirely inward, no longer probing outward toward the structures of Chaos, no longer sensing outward toward the breath of Void, but wholly devoting himself to the deepest level of observation of his own Dao Body — inward observation of the Ninefold Transformation, the Dao Body refined to the microscopic.

Before this, his resonance with the Ninefold Transformation had been only a macro-level fusion — he felt the overall current of transformation but did not understand how each detail operated. Now he would plunge into the microscopic level, exploring the specific operation of the nine transformations at the finest scale of the Dao Body — how each transformation affected every bone-thread, how each flowed through every layer of membrane and skin, how each stimulated every wisp of primordial qi. This was the deepening from knowing-that to knowing-why, the shift from passive recipient to active understander.

Pangu sent his Spirit-Consciousness penetrating through every textural layer of his Innate Bone-Frame. He discovered that the bone-frame was not uniform threads of primal essence but possessed an extraordinarily complex microscopic structure — each bone-thread was woven from countless finer bone-filaments, and each bone-filament was condensed from countless still finer bone-granules, nested layer upon layer to the deepest level, like the rings of a tree wrapping around its core, layer upon layer. The operation of the form-consolidation transformation at the microscopic level of the bone-frame astonished him — whenever the rhythm of form-consolidation sounded, the primal substance at the deepest reaches of the bone-frame underwent a subtle condensation; density increased; the outer bone-filaments condensed to a certain point and then stopped, while the inner layers continued condensing all the way to the core. The process was like a building being reinforced layer by layer from its foundation — each condensation made the entire framework denser and tougher. In that condensation, he heard the faint sounds rising from deep within his bones — the sound of qualitative change as they grew denser, like the dry crackling of parched earth splitting under the sun, but softer, denser, like countless tiny ceramic beads colliding against one another.

The operation of the spirit-clarification transformation within the Spirit-Sea was equally exquisite — the Spirit-Sea was like a sea of stars, with countless star-point-like particles of Spirit-Consciousness spinning, circulating, and interweaving within it. The spirit-clarification transformation increased the brightness of these star-points, raised their purity, and tightened their interconnections, like a silent starlight cleansing that made the entire star-sea ever more brilliant. In the brightness changes of that starlight, he read the gauge of his Spirit-Consciousness intensity — each increment of brightness corresponded to an increment in his capacity to perceive the external world. The brightest star-points in the star-sea represented his sharpest regions, while the dimmer ones indicated areas requiring further tempering. He inspected them one by one, like a night watchman carrying a lantern through the darkness, checking whether every door and window was secured. Those dimmer star-points, under his focused attention, began slowly to brighten, as though activated by his gaze, shifting from smolder to blaze.

Breath-circulation, turbidity-condensation, purification, annihilation-taming, yang-birth, chaos-return, origin-return — he tracked them one by one, explored them one by one, comprehended them one by one. Each transformation required the countless minute parts of the Dao Body to answer one another at the right time and in the right place. This was the creator's final knowing of his own creation. In those layer upon layer of deepening inward observation, he felt an unprecedented groundedness — he had at last learned every secret of his own body, leaving no blind zones. That groundedness was like a man who had groped in darkness for ten thousand years finally seeing clearly what he held in his hands.

Toward his own Dao Body, Pangu conceived a deep reverence. What he revered was the Great Dao — the Great Dao itself that had designed such an exquisite structure. He was merely a vessel, a medium. This reverence made his Dao heart humbler, purer. Through inward observation of the Ninefold Transformation and refinement of the Dao Body to the microscopic, he completed the most important preparation before opening Heaven and Earth — thorough self-knowledge. Only after a person has thoroughly understood himself is he qualified to create a world, because the starting point of creating a world is understanding the miniature cosmos within oneself.

He turned his attention inward and minutely observed how the Ninefold Transformation operated across every level of his body. When the form-consolidation transformation occurred, his bones first softened, like metal heated to high temperature becoming pliable, and then re-cooled and hardened into new shapes — this process was accompanied by a strange tactile sensation, as though the interior of his body was slowly flowing and solidifying, like melted wax gradually losing fluidity as it cooled, shifting from flowing to viscous to hard. During the spirit-clarification transformation, the ten thousand points of light in his Spirit-Sea lit up together and then dimmed in sequence, like a silent stellar symphony performed in darkness, each flash and fade accompanied by a contraction and expansion of his Spirit-Consciousness, as though the entire star-sea were breathing. He tracked the chain of changes triggered by each transformation — from bone to meridian, from meridian to qi, from qi to spirit — and in that microscopic-level observation, he saw the entire process of how this body, composed of Chaos materials, operated precisely according to the program of the Ninefold Transformation. No deviation, no waste; every link was precise to the extreme. His body was a machine more precise than any known structure, and now he was reading its operating manual.

After the Ninefold Transformation had stabilized, Pangu's attention shifted to a long-neglected domain — the meridian structure within his body. Those meridians had previously existed only at the edge of his perception, like a vague net spread throughout his body. After the Ninefold Transformation had accelerated countless times, the contours of those meridians grew ever clearer, like mountains and river-networks revealed after the mist had lifted. His perception flowed like water along the meridians, coursing up and down through his entire body once, recording the pathways and junction points of every major meridian. In that recording, he discovered that the meridian structure within his body bore an astonishing resemblance to the three-layer structure of the Chaos Egg — the outer layer corresponded to the Primordial Qi Sea layer, the middle layer to the Primordial Wall, the inner layer to the Void Shell. He was the miniature of the Chaos Egg, the microcosmic projection of the macrocosm within his body. Understand yourself, and you understand the cosmos. Using his meridian structure as a map, he matched the three layers within his body one-to-one with the three layers of the Chaos Egg, and in that correspondence discovered a still more exquisite symmetry — each of his meridians corresponded to an energy flow-line within the Chaos Egg, and each junction point corresponded to a key energy node within Chaos. In that moment, he understood — when he opened Heaven and Earth, he would not need to seek any external reference; his own body was the template for Heaven and Earth.

In the final rounds of the Ninefold Transformation, his body produced a strange vibration — spreading from bone to meridian, from meridian to Primordial Qi Sea, from Primordial Qi Sea to Spirit-Consciousness, diffusing outward layer by layer, reverberating endlessly through his body like ripples. The frequencies of those vibrations grew ever more precise, ever more unified through round after round of reverberation. At first they had been chaotic — different parts vibrating at their own frequencies, like an untuned orchestra each playing its own tune. But as the Ninefold Transformation progressed, those chaotic frequencies were corrected bit by bit, as though by an invisible hand, gradually converging into a single voice, until the vibrational cadence of every living mote in his body had become the same number. In that unified vibration throughout his body, he felt an unprecedented harmony — a spontaneous coordination, like all the instruments in an orchestra naturally finding the same beat. His body had become a precision instrument, every component doing the most fitting work at its own position. In that harmony, he felt a near-perfect tranquility — everything was in its rightful place, operating in its rightful way. In that tranquility, he sank into the final stage of deep slumber, waiting for the moment when the unified vibration of his entire body would precisely coincide with the natural cadence of the Chaos Egg — that would be the most precise opening-moment he could find in the long river of time.
