Chapter One Hundred Forty-Seven: Light and Dark Join Hands — Together Against the Evil
Volume Four: The Dao Gives Rise to Myriad Things — Life First Sprouts
The war against the Savage Fiends entered its longest phase: a grinding millennium of attrition. Pangu, Xiwei, and Yuanji fought as one — light above, darkness below, and a fading creator between them, holding the center.
Their coordination grew seamless. When Xiwei's light drove the miasma from a surface region, Yuanji would seal the underground channels beneath it, preventing re-infection. When Yuanji detected a new fissure forming, Xiwei would concentrate its light upon the area, burning away the contamination before it could spread. And Pangu — Pangu was the anchor, the fixed point around which their defense revolved. His will held the great seals in place; his body was the foundation upon which every countermeasure rested.
The Savage Fiends adapted. They learned to avoid Xiwei's light by spreading through the deepest strata, far below where even Yuanji could easily reach. They learned to erupt in multiple places at once, splitting the defenders' attention. They learned to feint — to mass their forces in one region, then strike in another when the defenders had been drawn away.
But Xiwei, Yuanji, and Pangu learned too. They developed tactics of their own — feints within feints, layered defenses, preemptive strikes at nascent fissures before they could fully form. The war became a chess game played across the entire world, with every eruption and every sealing another move in a contest that would determine the fate of all living things.
Light and dark joining hands, together against the evil. In their unity, Pangu saw a truth he had long suspected: Heaven and Earth were not merely a place, but a living whole whose parts had learned to answer one another. The world was growing up, learning to defend itself.
