Chapter One Hundred Twenty-One: The Wuxing First Form — Primordial Qi Differentiates

Volume Four: The Dao Gives Rise to Myriad Things — Life First Sprouts

After Heaven and Earth had taken form, Pangu's Primordial Source, though nearly spent, could still sustain his consciousness for one final span. He resolved to use this last stretch of time to observe the world's growth — to see how it would walk its true path of growth out of the framework that had been fixed.

The first transformation to occur was the formal emergence of the Wuxing qi. Before this, the Wuxing had been only byproducts of clear-turbid intermingling, existing in a hazy, indistinct state. Now, they began to separate from clear qi and establish themselves independently, each forming its own complete circulation. The five elemental qi forms — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth — each acquired their own exclusive flow channels between Heaven and Earth.

The primordial qi of the world was no longer the monotonous duality of clear and turbid. Five elemental qi forms of distinct properties now interwove, interacting and transforming into one another. They were like five differently colored threads, weaving together a richly hued tapestry of a world.

Each of the Wuxing qi found its proper place. The Fire phase rose upward alongside clear qi. The Water phase sank downward in tandem with turbid qi. The Wood phase diffused outward in all directions. The Metal phase converged inward. The Earth phase settled at the center, harmonizing all. The distribution of the Wuxing presented an ordered spatial structure.

The Wuxing first forming, primordial qi differentiating. The perfection of the Wuxing would lay the foundation for the diversity of all things. The five properties — Metal, Wood, Water, Fire, and Earth — would give rise to an infinitely rich array of material forms.

The Wuxing did not emerge simultaneously. The order of their birth matched the sequence of primordial qi flow within Pangu's own body: Metal in the lungs, Wood in the liver, Water in the kidneys, Fire in the heart, Earth in the spleen. When the Wuxing found their corresponding positions within his body, the great earth also manifested divisions of qi that echoed them. Five regions — five properties — formed the fundamental ordering of all matter to come.

Pangu opened his eyes. His gaze pierced through the Heaven-Earth Interlayer and fell upon that qi now in the process of separating. At the clear-turbid convergence where once only Chaos had reigned, fine fissures now appeared. Five-colored light seeped through those fissures, as if something were tearing through the swaddling of primordial qi, struggling to be born.

The first wisp of pure Wuxing qi escaped through a fissure. It was golden, carrying a metallic texture, climbing upward along a perfectly straight path. Pangu watched that stream of Metal Qi as it grazed the Clear-Turbid Membrane, leaving a bright trail that lingered long before fading. Moments later, a second presence of qi emerged — green-blue, far gentler than Metal Qi. It did not rise in a straight line like its predecessor but meandered through the air, like an invisible serpent searching for something.

The third kind of qi was black, deep as an abyss. It did not ascend but sank downward, passing through the pores of the Clear-Turbid Membrane and plunging all the way into the depths of turbid qi. Pangu watched as, after sinking into the turbid qi, it did not vanish but slowly diffused through the murk, like a drop of ink falling into clear water. The fourth kind of qi was red — scorching and bright. When it appeared, it brought a wave of searing heat that made the surrounding air warp. That wave of heat struck like a living force. The red qi climbed upward but paused midway, as if hesitating over where to go, and at last came to rest in the middle reaches of the Heaven-Earth Interlayer, slowly rotating there into a glowing vortex.

The final kind of qi was yellow — deep, steady, and calm. It was not eager like the other four to seek its place. Instead, it slowly spilled from the fissure, spreading outward like flowing water to cover the broadest regions. Wherever the yellow qi passed, the restless stirring of the other four qi forms quieted.

All five elemental qi forms had departed their matrix. Each now coursed through the space between Heaven and Earth, clearly differentiated yet mutually resonant. Pangu watched all of this in silence, his breathing rhythm beginning to synchronize with the pulse of the five elemental qi forms — with each inhalation, the Wuxing qi expanded outward; with each exhalation, they contracted inward. His body had become the pulse of the entire world.

Pangu raised his hand. The five-colored qi flowed about his fingertips. Gold wound around his index finger, green-blue around his middle finger, black around his ring finger, red around his little finger, and yellow suffused his entire palm. His fingers trembled faintly — not from weakness, but from these last resonances between the qi and his Primordial Source.

The trajectories of the five great qi forms wove through space into an enormous web. Metal Qi occupied the highest position, near the Celestial Dome, like the skeleton of the sky. Wood Qi spread across the broad region between Heaven and Earth, weaving a green-blue net. Water Qi sank to the lowest places, gathering in the depressions of the earth. Fire Qi leaped and churned within the Heaven-Earth Interlayer, forming a warm band of radiance. Earth Qi evenly blanketed the surface of the land, filling every crevice.

At the moment the Wuxing first formed, a harmony never before known emerged between Heaven and Earth. That harmony sent ripples spreading across the Spirit-Platform Sea, and with it, Pangu's consciousness grew clearer still. The emergence of the Wuxing meant that Heaven and Earth now possessed a complete material foundation.

He looked down at his own body. His four limbs had grown so transparent that he could see the world behind them. The radiance of his Primordial Source was fading irreversibly. Yet he did not hurry, nor did he fear. He still had time — time enough to watch the Wuxing fully stabilize, to see the complete cycle establish itself among them.

The five elemental qi forms were still settling their positions in space. Metal Qi continued to rise; Water Qi continued to sink; Wood Qi diffused outward; Fire Qi gathered into clusters in the middle zone; Earth Qi grew ever more compacted. The process was exceedingly slow, each day's change barely perceptible, but Pangu watched with patience, letting not one detail escape his notice.

He saw that when Metal Qi and Water Qi met, they produced a fine friction that sparked with white radiance. He saw that when Wood Qi and Earth Qi encountered each other, the Earth Qi grew softer and looser. He saw that wherever Fire Qi passed, the air became dry and warm. Every interaction was laying the foundation for the complex laws of the future world.

After the five elemental qi forms had separated, the space between Heaven and Earth grew richer still. Before, there had been only the monotonous motion of clear qi rising and turbid qi sinking. Now, five elemental qi forms of distinct properties operated each in its own domain — independent yet mutually influencing. Standing among them, Pangu felt five forces acting upon his body from different directions. His skin simultaneously sensed the sharpness of Metal, the suppleness of Wood, the coolness of Water, the warmth of Fire, and the density of Earth — like a piece of music played by five instruments at once, reverberating through the world. He tuned his breathing to the rhythm of the Wuxing — feeling their convergence on the inhale, their diffusion on the exhale. In this synchrony, he discovered a pattern: the movements among the Wuxing were not random. They followed an order hidden in the deep, an order that had not yet fully revealed itself. He only needed to wait.

Pangu walked slowly among the Wuxing. When he passed through the zone of Metal Qi, his steps grew heavy, as if some force were pulling him downward. Through the Wood Qi zone, his steps grew light, as if springs had sprouted beneath his feet. Through the Water Qi zone, his soles felt a moist chill. Through the Fire Qi zone, a warmth spread across his back. Through the Earth Qi zone, his whole body was wrapped in a sense of safety. He stored every one of these sensations deep in his heart.
